Unico a combatterlo è lo stesso Batman, a capo di un pugno di disperati partigiani. Nel sogno, i ribelli, alla ricerca della kryptonite, vengono traditi e massacrati, e Bruce assiste impotente all'intervento da parte di un esercito di alieni insettoidi, i Parademoni di Darkseid, il quale probabilmente ha invaso la terra e controlla anche la mente di Superman (si scorge anche il grande simbolo Omega di Darkseid nel deserto).

Sempre in questa visione, Bruce viene imprigionato e Superman lo uccide, sfondandogli il petto e facendo un riferimento alla morte di una donna a lui molto cara (Lois Lane). Alla morte di Batman nell'incubo, segue il risveglio di Bruce nella vita reale, il quale riceve una breve visita da parte di Flash[3], venuto dal futuro per avvisarlo del fatto che lui aveva ragione su Superman, il quale sarebbe impazzito a causa della morte di Lois. L'incubo non era altro che il futuro e Flash, tornando indietro, ne ha modificato gli eventi.

Alfred cerca di dissuadere Bruce dal combattere contro Superman, ritenendolo un suicidio, ma Batman va avanti per la sua strada e tenta di rubare la kryptonite, con l'ausilio della Batmobile, agli uomini di Lex ma, dopo un lungo inseguimento, il Cavaliere Oscuro viene fermato da Superman, che gli intima di ritirarsi dall'attività di vigilante mascherato. Successivamente, la senatrice Finch ordina a Superman di presentarsi al Congresso per appurare definitivamente, nell'inchiesta sui fatti accaduti in Africa (che si scoprono essere sempre parte del diabolico piano di Luthor) e sulle azioni incontrollate di Superman, se egli sia una minaccia o meno, ma Lex, che ha messo una bomba nella sedia a rotelle elettrica di Wallace Keefe (anch'egli presente per testimoniare contro Superman), uccide tutti i presenti, camuffando il fattaccio come un attentato terroristico kamikaze dello sfortunato dipendente della Wayne Enterprises.
